Poking my nose through the door of this long and interesting thread.
I nearly always look at Sonny’s friday Flowers when it’s still, or already,
dark here. That’s due to the time difference between poster and recipient’s
locations.
I had always seen them as if they had just been shot « here ».
My brains probably unconsciously concluded that they were somewhat dark because
Sonny shot them in my time frame, before leaving for work, or on his way back.
I always appreciate his treatment of the subtle nuances he gets in the
highlights even to the « detriment « of the rendition of the darker zones,
i.e. most often, what doesn’t count, the background. On the contrary, this acts
as a shrine of sorts for the beauties Arden grows.
Contrary to other photos, I think I’ve never been tempted, nor attempted, to
download them and reprocess any to « my taste » What Sonny gives us to see
pleases my eye as such, with the reservation that my brains, as afore said, are
calibrated for specific periods of the day.
Technique, perception, intent, etc. All subjective in the end, is it not?
Keep them coming following your instinct Sonny, You have a dedicated follower
here. But please, never tell him at what time you took the photo ;-)

canes. Yes, I am teasing. I have always liked your images and the way you
end up processing them. You have a wonderful “eye” and sense of

However, did you not mean that you've "burned" the bright spots in the
background ... making them darker? Dodging them would make them brighter.

Yes, they are blackberry blooms. Each stamen turns into a seed on a
berry, but I'm no expert on flowers.
If you're not teasing about the dark, (which I don't see on three
monitors, a iPad Pro, and my iPhone X) then perhaps you need to check
your monitor, or resign yourself that I'm shooting in situ, available
light, and where I find them. I usually spend much more time editing
than shooting, and my aim is always a pleasant image drawing attention
to the bloom. I usually subdue the background as much as possible,
avoiding blooming (heh) of the whites. Thus this image not only has
vignette applied, but I've also dodged bright spots in the bokeh.
