Alex and Xavier,

I am neutral (Swiss). The French were first!

About Nicephore Niepce
(http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/exhibitions/permanent/wfp/3.html)
-----------------------
The first photograph, made in 1826, is a view from his studio window
that took eight hours to expose.

About Fox Talbot
(http://www.rleggat.com/photohistory/history/talbot.htm)
----------------
The earliest surviving paper negative is of the now famous Oriel window
in the South Gallery at Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire, where he lived. It is
dated August 1835.

If you're ever in France, Alex, a visit to the photo museum of
Chalon-sur-Saône is well worth it. You can even gaze out of the window
from where the first "photograph" was taken....

Best
