Douglas -
I also found this bit informative -
Guido Krebs, is quoted as saying (my very rough translation, it's 2 AM here):
Oy; I guess it's been a more stressful week than I thought.

Bob,
maybe you missed this when you were away, this is a close up of the spring mechanism on the Novoflex adapter. There are rumours that the Leica mount part of this adapter, and of the Contax/EOS adapter produced and sold in Germany by Foto Huppert, are actually supplied by the makers of the Leica components.
Both companies are very reticent about saying who actually makes it. Rumour has it that it's milled out of a piece of (phosphor?) bronze. Foto Huppert also claims that the C/Y to EOS adapter is QC'd by Zeiss machines.
Canon's marketing manager in Germany,
"Contax users are a very discerning group who see Canon as a real alternative
since Contax is not presently offering a digital body. For this reason we, at Canon, are pleased to see that there are adapters on the market which enable Contax users to use all their lenses for digital photography by buying "just"
one Canon body. The decision to upgrade to fast AF Canon-L high quality lenses
then becomes much easier to make. For us, this group of users is a welcome addition to our market segment to which we hope to demonstrate and prove the quality of our complete programme"
I suppose you could just as well substitute the name Leica for Contax.
Cheers

I'm liking the fact that braver souls than me just went ahead and pried with the screwdriver...
