What surprises me is that the catalog number matches the description in my Leica R7 guide.

I've noticed that David Youngs uses a grid instead of the default screen on his R8. Well, I'm a real amateur, I cannot do without the split image in the center.

This is absolutely true with the 24mm and 35mm, and also the 90mm.

The only drawback is that it could have been a 45Deg split like on the Pentax P30T owned long ago.

Never mind.

Yes it will work in the R7 but if it's an R4 screen it will be darker than a
newer screen.
