For one thing, it has never been very profitable (if at all). For another, several of the answers from this forum make the point that AF is mandatory. Historically, only Nikon kept the F-mount when they moved to AF-- and it cost them dearly. Plus, if they want to sell more lenses, they may conclude that backwards compatibility may not be the best business decision (alienate old followers vs. capture new-- someone must have the numbers to do the math). Why stick with the R system? (hey-- they switched from screw to M) Finally, they have the perfect opportunity/excuse after the DMR's demise (to be blamed on Imacon). One does not even need to doubt the good intentions of the current leadership at Leica when they talked to you, David (although one could). It is simply that, after studying the reality of the market, they may decide that there is more future in the M system and that the 4/3 is a less risky proposition. Which would be fine-- a number of posters seem to be itching to buy new gear anyway... And those of us who are still enjoying film are perfectly happy with the very capable Leica SLRs from the past.
