G'Mornin' Ted!
I knew you got your start photographing stock car races, and that one of them
became your first published image. I didn't realize that you also drove the
cars! Good on you!
We will go back next year (this was the last race of the season) and I will try
to finagle my way into the in-field. There is a staircase to nowhere, which
would be the perfect spot from which to shoot. Yesterday, I was blocked by many
overhead wires, poles and chain link fencing meant to protect the crowd from
flying debris. Good for the crowd, not so good for photos. :-(
In a related note, I was amazed at the number of women racing, yesterday. Some
as young as 14!

Thankyou for allowing me to slip back to some of my life's exciting
times. "STOCK CAR and SRINT CAR" RACING while living in Ottawa, CANADA.
Apart from racing on local tracks in the area. We raced on the Lansdowne
Park race track right in the city. Usually to a full house packed
stadium. One of the first photographic things I did on a regular weekly
basis was SHOOTING from the in-field during the races, then capturing
the winner of each race with the winning flag and selling to the driver
and pit crew the next week an 8X10 B&W print of car & driver holding the
winning flag. OF course for the huge amount of $1.00each. Well I always
made enough money to pay for film, paper, chemicals and enjoying the
excitement of the races from the infield. Then I started driving myself
and taking pictures when I wasn't in a race myself. Then I got into the
more dangerous "SPRINT CAR" racing doing the same thing of pictures 1
race and photographer next race. aaaaahhh those were the days of youth
and great fun of living wild & crazy!!!!!! :-) :-) cheers, Dr.ted grant

Yesterday was a first, for I'd never been to a stock car race. It was
fun! - even if it was a cold, windy, dull day.
There was a young lad, just 16 years of age, who set the fastest
qualifying time at just over 17 seconds for a lap.
Here he is, in #41, leading the pack as he heads into turn two ... with
his dad, in #33, holding second.
