it seems the hardware is ready to go, the firmware isn't quite ready yet

Doug, Gary, Andy and all:

One of my biggest disappointments when I organized the LHSA's Spring Shoot last April was that Leica had hoped to be able to bring a Digital Modul-R prototype the show. It was not to have been available for loan, but certainly for 'show and tell". Sadly, that did not come to pass. :(

At this point, all the Japanese brands are using 12 bit sensor, with an internal conversion to 16 bit. I understand, from Leica, that it the Modul-R is to be a full 16 bit sensor. That is why they chose Imacon to do the firmware, for they have much experience with the full 16 bit, 22mpixel medium format backs.

What I would like to know is if the firmware will be field upgradable or will units have to be returned for a rebuild, as with the Kodak 14n?

Unless the performance is spectacular, I'd be hard pressed to buy a Modul-R. One could buy a nice body from Brand C or N, and several lenses for the price. And, of course, specialty lenses such as the 400/560 Telyts can be used with an adapter on Brand C with no loss of functionality - since they have none! ;-)

But, if it *is* 'all that' (and the 16bits might do it!), then I'm going to have a problem finding that much money... but I'll certainly work on it!

Cheers!
