Earlier, I wrote and Elliot responded:

The alternative is the new Canon 20D with their better zoom (28 to 135mm
equiv. at f2.8 as I recall) - keeping the R8 for film. I've fondled such a
package and it seems to work very well. With a Leica to EOS mount adapter,
for the long glass...

David: Sounds like a much better plan to me as well...

How much money would one save?

Hi Elliot:

The Digi-Modul-R is rumoured to be coming out at US$4500, or about CAD$5350.

The Canon 20D is about CAD$2200 and the lens is about CAD$750, The Leica R to EOS adapter is US$175. That's $~CAD$210 + shipping... say, $225. So, the pkg would be about CAD$3225, for a saving of CAD$ 2125 or US$1785.

(No allowance has been made for taxes, duties or the fact that the US$ is going lower every day on the international markets. Exchange rates assumed were 1US$ = CAD 0.84. Today, the Canuck Dollar was just above US .84. Note that I have not checked these prices... they were given to my by Henning, who has purchased this combination, in Canada, within the last 30 days. Your pricing may very slightly.)

Even with the disclaimers above; the realization that all digital equipment loses 50% of it's value in the first 18 months, there is a substantial savings in loss of investment by going the Canon route, as well.

Besides, we'd end up with a very nice f2.8 zoom in the bargain!

I'd love to support Leica on this one. I have no doubt that the digi-back, when released (or soon after) will be a better performer than the Canon. With 10 mp vs 8 mp on the Canon, it should make a difference in very large prints. For smaller prints, I don't see a huge difference.

I'm willing to concede that clarity, shadow detail, dynamic range and numerous other factors may all be better with the Leica Digi-back. The question in my mind remains - is it enough difference to justify the cost?

I like the fact that the Digi-back is firmware upgradable in the field. With Canon, you have to buy the next generation body. However, if the cost to upgrade the firmware is close to the cost of a new Canon body (as factory upgrades on Kodak's 14n have been) the advantage is negated.

Like I said, I'd love to support Leica on this one... I'd love to be able to say that I have kept the faith. But, the cost structure is not encouraging. :(

Cheers!
