Elliot asked:
I almost hesitate to ask....Leica versus third party? My inclination is
to go with a third party...
Hi Elliot!
I find that a 'good' brand of filter (B&W, Rodenstock, etc.) is just as
good as the Leica branded versions (which I understand are made by
Schneider, who own B&W.)
BTW: I did learn one trick. Like you, I was not eager to pay for an E60,
in any brand, as they're all expensive! Just some are more so than
others! So, I bought a B&W 62EI-60EA, 60 to 62mm step-up ring (Available
from B&H, amongst many others). Then I can use the more common & much
cheaper 62mm size - though still in a good brand.
The ring is brass (doesn't bind like the cheap aluminum ones) and is
slender enough that the collapsible lens hood on the 80~200/f4 Vario slides
right over it, just like it does the proper E60 ones!
FWIW, I use B&W filters except for my circ. pol. which is a Rodenstock.
Have fun in Buenos Aires. I've never managed to get south of Rio, but that
was a fun city too!
Cheers!
