Andy, on my 300D, I get both visual and audible confirmation of focus.  Using a
Sigma 24~70 f/2.8, camera set in Aperture Priority mode, lens set for AF,
simply point at subject, press shutter release halfway and the center of the
selected focus point lights up with red dot and there's a beep.  Lens can be
switched to MF and when the focus ring is turned to the point where the camera
detects correct focus, same thing - selected focus point lights up with red dot
and there's a beep.
