Having learned a bit more about how this lens is constructed, I think that there may be some subtle performance differences due to the use of a moving iris vs. the fixed iris in other zooms, but I don't know. I haven't been sufficiently tempted to swap it out for the 35-70. I'm pretty sure that the fixed fl lenses would outperform the zoom, since they can be better corrected and faster. However, I'm at the point where travelling light is often an important consideration, so I seldom travel with more than two lenses with it, typically the 28-70 and 180 2.8. The 100 APO is a specialty lens, and is too close to the 70 end to justify carrying it unless I know that the 180 will be too long for the location. If I need a full kit, it's hard to justify taking the Leica instead of my Rollei 6008i system, since both kits weigh about the same and still make it as carry-on in planes in their hard cases.
