David, I suggest that you consider a used, pan-tilt head, for example, the Velbon PH-640 head (magnesium, 1 lb 6 oz) for sale at B&H for $65.00 USD. I'm confident there are others available in your neck of the woods. Could make the tracking during those final, irreplaceable split- seconds a bit simpler and the price seems right. Or, better yet, a borrowed one? If I had one, I'd be happy to lend it to you for your expedition. See http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home? Requirements are: 1) physically small & lightweight, for travel. 2) secure enough to hold R8+DMR +400 Telyt w/2x steady. 3) must be able to point at the noon sun (for solar eclipse photography) 4) relatively low cost. At Photokina I saw the Novoflex Magic Ball 50 (Holds 7 kilos, so should = be OK for weight) that was not too large, and looked really slick! = http://www. adorama.com/NVMBH50.html?sid=3D1170347693130532 Has anyone here used one of these. Other ideas?
