Hi, David I read somewhere that the only ball head to buy was the Arca Swiss, but that one had to buy 3 others before reaching that conclusion... I guess now the new favorite is the RRS "Ultimate Ball head" I am on my 2nd one before, a Benro KS-1, an inexpensive Chinese version of the Kirk. It is supposed to hold 12kg, and it seems to do fine with my heaviest combo (Contax AX + old Tamron SP 200-500mm). The quick-release plates are only so-so, but the ball head seems very well made, and has worked as promised. Given the extreme conditions (cold!) where you operate, I guess the RRS seems a safer option. Detailed review in The Luminous Landscape.
