Regarding black backgrounds and increasing the black levels.
I know there are many here, who are experienced photographers. We also have
many "lurkers" who never post, but who are eager to learn.
Assuming you use Windows (most of us do) and not a Mac, I can highly recommend
"FastStone Image Viewer". I recommend it to all my students. It's a no-cost,
remarkably versatile image viewer with more than basic image editing functions
built-in.
I used it (nothing more) to alter Aram's photo (I also used it to increase the
white level, on that one) and to increase the black level in the comparison
shots just posted.

It is regularly updated and a great addition to almost any photographer's
arsenal of tools.
