Hi Ted!
Rodeo photography is truly a challenge. The shots *can* be spectacular, but
many, many fine opportunities are ruined by any number of factors - none of
which are in your control.
The rider can have a spectacular dismount, but from the wrong side, so the
animal comes between you and your shot. Judges, either on foot or horseback,
frequently get in the way, moving into your line of sight at the last moment.
There was one Judge at the Pritchard Rodeo who I'd have happily throttled, had
I had the chance. It seemed that he and his horse were always getting in the
way!
When shooting bulldoggers, the Hazer, or his horse, or even the bulldogger's
own horse, can get in the way, Or, they'll make a spectacularly good run, but
in a direction away from the photographer.
Shoot 1000 photos and 950 will be well exposed, sharp & clear. But, because of
the other factors, if you come away with a dozen decent shots, you've had a
good day!

Well all the extra bodies and horse certainly screwed-up what would have
been a super Arial cowboy shot!! L
Any time I shot the CALGARY Stampede I was always in fear of this type
of situation spoiling what can be seen here with all the extra bodies. L
But then that's life on the rodeo trail.
However you still captured the peak moment!

Backgrounds are a big problem in Rodeo photography.
They usually consist of fences (an necessary evil), and remarkably ugly
clutter of trucks, trailers, tractors, horses waiting their turn, and
so forth.
I've always liked the Pritchard Rodeo. It's a small event, but fun, and
in an arena that is backed by tall, stately pine trees. It's just
bloody lovely.
Unfortunately, the fence is there - you can't do much about that - and,
in any rodeo, there is the ever present danger of judges, bull-fighters
and horses getting in the way.
This shot was no exception, but I thought it worth showing, because
while I've seen hundreds of riders come off their bulls, broncs and
such, I've never seen one do it with this much style.
