I've used LEICA GLASS 50 years out of the 65 I've been shooting assignments for
clients of all kinds, usually as a photojournalist.
Here on the LUG, sometimes I'm amazed at how many folks test their lenses, even
after they've been using them for some time?
LUBRICATING??? NEVER=EVER! :-(
Here's how I pretty well "tested" a new lens out of the box, direct from LEICA!
I clicked the lens to body, held camera to eye clicked a few shutter releases
for sound, focused the lens, clicked a few more. Loaded film and that was it!
The next click maybe in a coal mine... "no flash" simply because "If you can
see your subject?" You can shoot it! Oh sure you maybe shooting at ASA 3200,
aperture wide open?! :-) 1/30th
But wait a moment!
I said the assignment was in a "coal mine!" So you whip the lens to wide open
and extremely careful shutter releasing as your eye sees the photo moment...
"click" at
30th of a second or less. And you have a razor sharp image at ASA 3200 AND LENS
WIDE OPEN! TRY IT SOME DAY! :-)

Don't worry about the f32, Peter. In 20 years and countless thousands of shots
with my 400/6.8, it has only ever been at one aperture. Wide open at 6.8.
Not true ... I think I stopped it down for a Macro shot of the 28mm f2.8
PC-Super Angulon-R for a review in Viewfinder mag., in 2004. But that's about
it!
It's a great piece of glass, but not exactly "fast glass".
Enjoy it, but don't worry about the f32 setting!

Thanks, David! I knew that the mention of WD would get somebody's------
attention. :) Yes, it's an amazingly simple design, like you said; and I
found the screws that you mentioned. So, when I get some white grease
later this evening I'll give it a go. Thanks very much. The f-stop of 32
has me intrigued. I have never had a lens that exceeded f-22 before.
Does this mean I'm half way to being part of the F64 Club? Yeah, right -
in my dreams!

I had the same problem with my 400/6.8, when I first got it nearly 20
years ago. (Unless you've got the pistol grip 5.6 version, the
focusing tube is the same on both.)
The lens is easy to disassemble. Remove the lens head and you can see
inside the tube, where you'll find that the focusing runs on 3 chrome
plated rails.
Clean the old grease off the rails using a clean, soft cloth moistened
with Ronsonol Lighter Fluid. It's better than gas for cleaning old
oil, easier to manage in the house, and leaves no residue.
I then lubricate the rails with the tiniest amount of white grease. I
used a now 50 year old tin of Valvoline X-All, but any light, white
grease should do. I put a tiny (and I do mean tiny!) amount on my
finger, dabbed it on the rails and ran the rails back & forth 50 to 75
times, to spread it out evenly. Remove any excess.
That as it! It was still working perfectly when I sold it last
February.
Have fun with it. It's a nice piece of glass! And, I want to see
your results!

Good afternoon. Could I please ask for some suggestions as to what
to use to lubricate the slide zoom on a Leica Telyt 560mm / 6.8? I
have been given the lens today by an elderly friend who has not used
the lens in decades. The glass is clear and bright and the diaphram
works fine; but the zoom slide is a little stiff. I have been gently
sliding it repeatedly, but it seems to need a touch more than
physical manipulation. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated,
as I'm holding myself back from the handy dandy misting of WD40.
