The lens I have is the Vario-Elmar-R 35-70 f/4. It was made in 1997 and
has a macro range included. One of the eight lens elements is
Aspherical. Leica says it is "a lens rich with contrast our to the
frame edges and with distortion extremely contained......performance
comparable to the best lenses with a fixed focal length". I think this
is the most under rated lens in the leica stable. I have had very good
experiences with it as a 'stay on the camera' lens. The new 20-90 f/2.8
is a lens I would love to have but not at a going price of $3295 on
eBay. My 35-70 with ROM contacts and the 2X APO with ROM makes a very
nice and extremely sharp short tele or portrait lens. Unfortunately the
loss of two stops makes it hard to use as a hand held shooter.
Again, thanks for all your answers. I do appreciate not being treated as
dumb as I feel sometimes.

Wow,
That is a good one.
Leica lenses regularly use "Rare Earth" glass whenever the designers deem it advisable. Rare Earth, is everyone elses designation for "ED", or Extra Low Dispersion, or APO or LD glass.
I think that just one aspherical lens element is all that is needed to call a lens "Aspherical".
I think that this question of the use of both Aspherical and Rare Earth (APO) glass would better be addressed by contacting the great people at the Leica factory technical department. They've always been able to answer any of my questions in the past.
I wish that I could give you a more definitive answer.
