G'Mornin!
Back on the 16th of this month, I took a trip to The Othello Tunnels and
experimented with the HI-Res mode. You may recall that I posted some comments
on this list, the following Saturday.
What I didn't tell you was that after taking those sample pics I took a path
down to the river, in search of more shots. It was not a "park path", but a
crude one made by multitudes of people finding a way through the bush. To make
a short story shorter, near the bottom, i put my foot on a rock - which then
shifted and I did a face-plant. As I landed, I watched my 12~40/2.8 PRO lens
hit a rock - not too hard, but hard enough. I picked myself up, dusted myself
off, and thought I was fine, only to discover, later, that I had made a
hairline fracture in my lower left leg. (It's healing nicely, thank you.)
The next day, I mailed my lens to the Canuck repair depot for Olympus in
Toronto - some 3,900km (or 2,400 miles, if you prefer) away. My lens was
returned to me at 8:10 this morning.
What impressed me was that for CAD $249 (roughly US$189 or 169 Euros), they
replaced the main frame of the lens (whatever that is), the front lens barrel,
the zoom ring and the lens mount! They cleaned it, updated the firmware and
returned it via air-courier, prepaid.
Total time out of my hands, including shipping time (both ways) and 2 weekends
(when they are closed) was 11 days.
I'd hate to think what such a repair would have cost, or how long it would have
taken, had the repair been sent to Leica!
Colour me pleased.
David.
