Frank, Cheng & Philippe:
Thank you all, for your comments. Personally, I cannot see where the problem
is. You remove the SD card from the camera, put it in a reader and copy the
files to your computer. Windoze, Mac & Linux boxes will all do this without
special software, though any of a number of freeware packages may make it a bit
simpler.
I've done some research, and it seems that virtually every paid or free Raw
Developer will work with Sony files.
Of course if you want to do it via wire, there may be a few fewer choices, but
there is still much more ways than just Capture One. Irfanview, Faststone
Image Viewer and Stamp Ver.2.8 will all do it, and I'm sure there are more.
(They'll do it with the SD card in a card reader, too.) Now, I agree with
Frank, using a wire is awkward & slow - perhaps not the best choice, but there
should still be no problem and certainly no limitations to just Capture One.
If someone here has a differing story, I'm all ears.
Meantime, thanks to all who responded, on list and off.
David.

I am using the original A7, the software provided by Sony is Playmemories
(http://http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/disoft/int/download/playmemories-home/win/en/index.html),
it will download from camera or from Card Reader to import to the computer,
reads Sony RAW files and edit, convert to differnent formats. (It is free)
Sony recently release a new suit of free software called Imaging Edge
(http://https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/imagingedge/en/download/),
which supports remote, view and edit of photos.Iincluding developing raw
files).
Hepe this helps!
Kind regards!
