Hi Peter,
The Jockey Club is the result of the genius combining East (Chinese love of
gambling) and West (British love of horses and horse racing).
It is a not for profit charity and, as you have noted, has funded numerous
projects for the better well being of Hong Kongers. It is beloved
by most Hong Kong people and many from all social and economic strata can be
seen Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons at one
of two race courses trying to beat the odds and win a little money. I don’t
think many in Hong Kong would have your “Big Brother” “creepiness”
reaction. Thanks for looking and commenting.
Happy New Year.
Howard

Following out a few links from Howard’s linked article about the restoration of
the Tai Kwun I saw this on the main sponsor’s (Hong Kong Jockey Club) web site.
Is it just me or does it “feel” a bit creepy like a cheery facade on a “Big
Brother” institution to anyone else.? To be fair, I read that the HKJC funds a
tremendous number of civic projects and donates vast sums of funds to
organizations in the communities, but still… is it just me with the
“creepiness” impression?
