On my way home from Alberta, today, I found myself driving west on the Bear
Lake Road (near Edson) when a large, Great Grey Owl flew into a tree just ahead
of me.
I managed to stop some 100 meters (328 feet) from the bird and proceeded to
walk back towards the owl, in the ditch - which was full of water, so I got my
shoes, sox & lower pant legs soaked.
I was shooting directly into the sun, so the shots were made at +2 stops. That
blew out the sky and gave the edges a look of being over-sharpened, but there
has been no sharpening done. Honest!
I would have preferred to get on the other side of him, for better light, but
when I got too close, he flew away.
As with all wildlife, you start from a considerable distance, because you never
know when you'll reach their fight or flight limit. I got some 28 shots, of
which this was one of the best & closest. What you see is about 80-85% of the
original frame.
Shot with the Pana-Leica 100~400 DG Vario-Elmar @ 400mm, hand-held. (The image
stabilization in that lens continues to amaze me!)
