I have been very disturbed since last Friday to have personally witnessed the
gassing of the Black-tailed Prairie Dogs by the City of Lubbock in the Canyon
Lakes area.
Further inspection of the Canyon Lakes area today, resulted in me realizing the
eradication is broad and includes all but a tiny area at Dunbar Lake and also
across MLK in other areas.
I found only one living prairie dog in the area which was until just recently
active with Black-tailed prairie dogs. All holes have been covered over with a
shovel.
eBird shows reports of Burrowing Owl activity at the Canyon Lakes area. As we
all know, these owls and other living creatures share the prairie dog holes.
There are a number of reasons the prairie dogs are an asset to this beautifully
rich wildlife area.
I am very upset at this discovery. Any feedback from others in our group would
be greatly appreciated.
