Using LCT to stretch Engineering graduates: How far do we go?

Employers often complain about graduates lacking technical and soft skills.
How this can be addressed is one of the biggest issues facing education.
Yet, thanks to knowledge-blindness, much of the debate lacks the tools to
understand, let alone address this issue. In this Roundtable, members of
the Stellenbosch Engineering LCT Group draw on a part of LCT that has yet
to be fully appreciated: insights. We shall use insights and the epistemic
plane to make sense of the ways of thinking of engineering graduates and
how they might be changed.

We know from previous work that engineering education at the degree level
foregrounds fundamental principles and approaches which are relatively
fixed. We also know that employers want engineering graduates to take these
‘fixed’ principles and procedures, and apply them in complex situations
involving multiple stakeholders. Using LCT we have begun to experiment with
ways to enable our students to move from fixed to more open-ended ways of
thinking. In this Roundtable, we are going to share three examples that are
intended to develop a more well-rounded graduate who can cope with the
complexity of the so-called ‘real world of work’. A key question that has
come up, though, is: How far do we go to ‘design’ code-shifting learning
strategies? What about students who learn differently? How do we stretch
students without constraining them to a set sequence and pace? We would
like to engage the LCT community in discussing these questions.
