Next LCT Centre Online Roundtable: October 10th – **4 pm SYD**
Decolonising knowledge and knowers: What does designing your module and
decolonising Science have to do with transformation?
Mlamuli Nkosingphile Hlatshwayo and Mags Blackie
Universities in the global South are currently trapped in a never-ending
crisis. This crisis is largely thanks to a myriad of challenges and some long
and deeply entrenched factors that those of us in South African have begun to
call “wicked problems”, that is, the unresolved
colonial/imperial/apartheid/neoliberal conditions confronting the public
university, its curricula, teaching and learning, and institutional cultures.
In South Africa, the 2015/2016 moment saw the emergence of the alliances of
students, academics, and outsourced workers pledging solidarity in an
unprecedented manner in lodging a critique at the snail pace of transformation
and decolonisation in the academe. In this Roundtable, we discuss two aspects
of our exploration of these issues, drawing on our contributions to the book
“Decolonising Knowledge and Knowers”. Both draw on the LCT tools of the
epistemic–pedagogic device and Specialization to explore links between power
and knowledge. The first aspect will focus on the problems and challenges of
focusing on how knowledge production, selecting knowledge, creating a module,
deciding on assessment practices are all “hidden” and often not made visible in
South African higher education. This we suggest, robs us of the possibilities
of real and material transformation and decolonial interventions in the sector.
In the second aspect we go “where angels fear to tread” by linking
decolonisation and Science, and exploring what this could look like for us in
practice.
