That looks like an opportunity for a discussion – why do you think ‘holds a PhD
and has published extensively’ exhibits stronger social relations, and then
stronger subjective relations? That sounds surprising to me.

LAST WEEK AT THE HUB:
We analysed how job adverts emphasise epistemic and/or social relations. We
started with “Mary Poppins” and compared the advert for a nanny written by Mr
Banks and his children. Although they were focused on very different sets of
attributes, some of our members were surprised to see that they had the same
basis of legitimation!
We had an interesting discussion about why a requirement that a candidate
“holds a PhD and has published extensively” emphasises social relations. We
thought it sets up a relatively strong subjective relation that puts a boundary
on who is eligible for the position.
One member of the Hub is using job descriptions in her research, but hadn’t yet
considered using Specialization to analyse them.So that’s useful for her to
think through.
THIS WEEK AT THE HUB:
On Wednesday 5 October, members of the Hub will be presenting an aspect of
their work-in-progress in an online meeting.
At Thursday’s Roundtable, Lee Rusznyak will be talking about a
knowledge-building approach to reflecting on practice. See the emails from the
LCT Centre for more details and the link.
NEXT WEEK AT THE HUB:
For the first time in more than two years, we will be meeting face-to-face on
12 October. Postgraduate students will present their research projects before
submitting them for examination. There will not be an online meeting on that
day.
