I have a cylinder type black sunflower seed feeder which is getting emptied
twice a day, all week now. And a suet block that is being used but not a whole
lot more than usual.
On May 7th I had 12 species at my feeder, plus robins in the yard.
I counted 24 male Goldfinches at once and there are plenty of females as well.
I also had purple finches of both sexes, white crowned and golden crowned
sparrows, song sparrows, juncoes, a male towhee, black capped chickadees,
cowbirds and redwings of both sexes, a few pine Siskins, Stellar Jays, and to
my great enjoyment my first of the year Black Headed Grosbeaks of both sexes .
Most all of these birds are still here today.
And as frosting on my bird-day cake, when I took my usual neighborhood
walk I added Wilson’s and Yellow rumped warblers, a Flicker in a dead alder and
a pair of Ring necked Ducks, a male Wood Duck in our small beaver pond. Canada
Geese and Turkey Vultures and ravens too, which are here most of the time
these days. Oh, and the 12 to 20 tree and violet green swallows that are
nesting in my boxes.
And on Thursday the 5th I spotted my first duckling of the year that I’m
guessing was a mallard in the slough along Sturdevant Road in Toledo.
It’s been a good week !
