Timely post (thanks!) as I thought maybe I was the only one. Even more than
Chickadees in my back yard, Red-Breasted Nuthatches have been amazing me
with their peanut-eating prowess the whole winter long. The short video
clip below offers some pretty good close-ups and slo-mos of this behavior,
and gives new meaning to the phrase "a bird in hand." Enjoy!

Just now a Chestnut-backed Chickadee lugged a whole peanut into the
Photinia hedge, reminding me of the skinny cat in my youth who used to come
home, head held high, carrying cantaloupe from our neighbor’s garden.
Chickadee pecked open the shell, flew off with half a nut, dropped the
rest. Until now they have just shot in and out for a single hulled
sunflower seed. I did not know they liked Jay food!
