RN Phalaropes are out there offshore in numbers now,
saw 15000+ in front of a distant squall line at Boiler Bay
on 5/9. It has mostly just been a very poor spring season
for strong N/NW winds, which are what tends to compress
RHPN and other migrating shorebirds along the beaches.
There was a strong west wind event on 5/5 which caused
the crash at STPs and elsewhere, but otherwise winds have
been from the south too much of the time.

I spent the morning looking for shorebirds between Heceta Beach and the
south jetty in Florence.  Numbers were low with hundreds (not thousands) of
Western Sandpipers and Sanderlings along with smaller numbers of Least
Sandpipers, Dunlin and Semipalmated Plovers.  A lone Red Knot was at Heceta
Beach, a Wandering Tattler at the north jetty mudflats and an alternate
plumaged Pacific Golden-Plover roosting on the south jetty.  Last year on
May 13, I counted over 1,200 Red-necked Phalarope at Heceta Beach; today –
none.  I think they are all in the valley.
