| Tulsa Race MassacrePresident Joseph Biden visited Tulsa, OK to mark the
100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre which took place on May 31, 1921.
It was one of the worst acts of racial violence in U.S. history. It is
estimated that 300 Black men, women, and children were murdered when the
neighborhood of Greenwood, also known as "Black Wall Street" was attacked and
destroyed by a White mob. In addition to the lives lost, thousands were left
homeless and many were placed in internment camps. With homes and businesses
destroyed, Black wealth, acquired after the end of slavery during the Jim Crow
era, was erased. Also erased was public awareness of the massacre and while
that history is now being acknowledged, economic recovery for Black
neighborhoods in Tulsa has been limited. |
