Vjera Thompson and I spent part of today birding from Florence north to
Strawberry Hill. Highlights included:
From Bray Point we could easily see over EIGHTY Marbled Murrelets. Add in over
20 at Klootchman and over a dozen at Bob Creek and there were well over a
hundred in 2.5 miles. I don’t think I have ever seen this many in such a small
area before. Not sure if we matched the hatch or what.
a Marbled Godwit and two Short-billed Dowitchers at the small cove north of the
crabbing pier.
calling Mountain Quail (well, it called once) up Cape Mtn. loop. Canada Jay at
same site. Pullout between Dry Cr. and the main junction up on top.
Of possible note is that all the Brandt’s Cormorants that used to nest by Sea
Lion Caves seem to have moved to Heceta lighthouse Parrot Rock.
The monstrous swarm of humans to the coast this afternoon matched the monstrous
swarm of scruffo adult California Gulls that has arrived, maybe a few days
early for such numbers, on the coast . Maybe 300 around the Florence jetties.
Vjera can add anything I forgot.
