Open GIS Consortium and LandXML.org are working together to provide an open
data method to exchange data between LandXML 1.0 and GML 3.0.

Read the press release from OpenGIS Consortium:

> OGC Announces First Interoperability Experiment Tackling LandXML and GML
Interoperability.

This project aims to bridge the data gulf between cad/engineering/survey
applications and GIS applications using xml-based open standards. This means
that GIS applications will be able to import LandXML data without requiring
software changes. GIS applications that support GML 3 will be able to
leverage LandXML data from over 40 available engineering/survey software
applications.

There are two phases to this project (producing two transform tools):

Phase 1: LandXML to LandGML transform tool

Applications and systems that can consume GML 3 will be able to read data
supplied in LandXML 1.0 via the "LandGML" transform tool. This is
accomplished by first creating a GML application schema that models
everything found in the LandXML schema, called "LandGML".

What is LandGML?

LandGML is a vertical application schema based on OpenGIS Geographic Markup
Language, GML 3. The purpose for LandGML is to enable GML 3 aware
applications to read the transformed data without requiring any special
knowledge of LandXML. This allows users of GML-enabled GIS applications
immediate access to civil engineering / land survey and transportation data.

And yes, there is already a demo for you to try out.
http://www.landxml.org/landgml/landxml2gmlform.asp will convert a LandXML
1.0 file, that you upload, and return a LandGML document.

Phase 2: LandGML to LandXML transform tool

Will start in June 2004 and produce a transform tool to convert LandGML
documents into LandXML documents.

Like LandXML, this is a great project that is trying to solve a real-world
problem and if you are interested in participating in anyway please contact
me.
