Nathan,
Los Angeles County uses a program called WSPG that actually uses 3D
lengths and the latest version of Inroads and Civil3D both are supposed to
be implementing 3D curved pipe abilities as well. I believe that Inroads
already has this functionality and Autodesk is implementing it in the
upcoming release.

  - Are there someone using 3D coordinates instead of 2D coordinates in
LandXML example files on pipenetworks?
I have never seen any examples of this, have others?
Most storm/waste water design packages in the US use calculations based on
pipe lengths from center of structure to center of structure, with pipe
invert elevation being the bottom of the pipe.

  - <Struct>.<Center> = Northing (Y), Easting(X) for the typical center of
structure, no elevation.

  - elevRim = the structure rim (top of structure at top surface)
elevation and elevSump = the structure sump (bottom or slightly above
bottom) elevation.

  - <Struct>.<Invert>.elev = the bottom elevation of the pipe.

Subject: [LandXML] LandXML: questions on <PipeNetworks>

  Dear all,

We are getting familiarized with <PipeNetworks> section and have couple of
open questions. Many of these are agreed locally but I would like to receive
international comments.

  - Are there someone using 3D coordinates instead of 2D
coordinates in LandXML example files on pipenetworks? and what are the
advantages you see in this.

  - What point you define as <Struct>.<Center>? e.g. absolute
center or center in upper surface on sump

  - Are you using elevRim and elevSump atributes in <Struct>? And
how you define these elevations, are you using top surface values?

  - what elevation elev you give in <Struct>.<Invert>? I propose
center for all inverts but local practices in Finland use also height of
water flow and pipe top in Inverts depending on pipe network type.

  - How do you define valves, hydrants e.g. "other devices"? It's
possible to use e.g. <CircStruct> or <Connection> elements.

Please provide some feedback and all the best for year 2006!

  Best regards,
