PA Waiting list will grow with proposed budget cuts! Make a call, make a visit, write a letter, sign the petition.... make a difference! http://www.kidstogether.org/pabudget.htm Don't assume students with disabilities will continue to have supports for successful participation when they leave schools after years of preparing for adult life through early intervention and special education. This year the proposed budget will only fund 100 slots of the possible 800 students exiting school to adult life. And then what.... they sit.... they wait. Loss of skills, opportunities, and an increase in the likelihood of abuse, neglect and exploitation. View this week's "The Parent Side" (tm) cartoon "Blame Tom, Dick and Harriet!" on the waiting list topic at http://www.kidstogether.org/images/Theparentside/waitinglisthires.jpg . If you have tried to make a difference, this cartoon will hit home with the frustrations and obstacles we face! Share it with your legislators. Almost 900 have signed the petition to oppose the budget cuts and waiting list! Make sure to encourage everyone you know to sign, that budget could be finalized the end of June, putting many people's lives in jeopardy. The time to act is now! Sign the petition and share with others! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/EndPAWaitingList ------------------------------------------------------------ Nationwide Huge Medicaid Cuts are Still at Stake The ARC of United States Action Alert http://capwiz.com/thearc/callalert/index.tt?alertid=15106926 The clock is ticking on extending the increase in the federal government's share of Medicaid (known as the federal medical assistance percentage (FMAP)). During the week of June 7, the Senate is likely to debate a tax extender bill that must include FMAP when it goes to the floor for a vote. This may be the last opportunity this year to vote to extend FMAP. Advocates must make their voices heard. Without swift enactment of a six-month FMAP extension, states will be forced to make very deep cuts in programs, including home and community based services, supported employment, dental care and even basic health care. By September 2011, principals at each of the system's 1,500 schools will be expected to enroll all but the most severely disabled students; those students will continue to be served by schools tailored exclusively to them. The shift echoes one of the central philosophies of the administration, giving principals more responsibility and control over their schools. It is also an effort to bring New York more in line with the nationwide trend of allowing special education students to benefit from regular classroom settings >>>read the entire article ------------------------------------------------------------ The 2010 Institute on Disability Satisfaction Survey Institute on Disability (IOD) at the University of New Hampshire http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QP76FG2 As the Institute on Disability (IOD) continues to work diligently toward ensuring individuals with disabilities and their families experience independence, productivity, and a satisfying quality of life, they are asking that you offer some thoughts on your experience with the IOD.
