Actually I got it working.  Thanks for the help though.

I had to actually go on the GPS and set NMEA to version 2.4. Then I had to unplug the USB and plug it back in and reset the GPS subsystem. Works GREAT now.

I'm almost thinking that the computer can't read the GPS, although it claims "GPS started in serial mode".

Build gpsd, run it as gpsd -p /dev/tty.USA19H1811P1.1 then run telnet localhost 2947

in the telnet, type:
r

and wait until you start getting data
if you get data, configure kismac to read from gpsd; does it work? if you don't get data, well, that's the problem.
