Hilton Pond 01-01-07 When the new year rolls around, we don't usually make resolutions, but we DO refresh our "natural calendar"--one that correlates human holidays with things we need to deal with around Hilton Pond Center. To see how our "natural calendar" works, please visit the 1-7 January 2007 installment of "This Week at Hilton Pond" at http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek070101.html Included are lots of photos of organisms and natural phenomena. As always, we also provide a list of all birds banded or recaptured during the week--plus a few miscellaneous nature notes. NOVA Next on NOVA: "Arctic Passage: Prisoners of the Ice" http://www.pbs.org/nova/arctic Broadcast: January 16, 2007 at 8 p.m. ET/PT (NOVA airs Tuesdays on PBS at 8 p.m. Check your local listings as dates and times may vary.) The greatest geographical prize of its day was the search for the fabled Northwest Passage through the island maze of Arctic Canada. In 1845, Great Britain mounted an all-out assault with a lavishly equipped expedition that was never heard from again. Then in the early 1900s, a little-known Norwegian adventurer set forth in a secondhand fishing boat and succeeded beyond all expectation. This two-hour special answers the riddle of why Sir John Franklin's mission failed and Roald Amundsen's made it. Hour one provides new details on the Franklin expedition, whose fate was one of the great mysteries of the 19th century. Hour two airs Jan. 23, 2007. <>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>~~~~~<>Educational CyberPlayGround K12 Newsletters Mailing List
