Hello Educators,

Next week, NOVA premieres "Wright Brothers' Flying Machine." This compelling
biography tells the story of Orville and Wilbur Wright -- two brothers who
invented the first powered airplane to achieve sustained, controlled flight --
and shows authentic replicas of their historic plane in flight. (Subjects
covered: physics, flight, social studies, U.S. history, world history,
technology/engineering)

     The Unlikely Inventors
     Learn why the Wright brothers took on the challenge of flight, how they
     tackled the control system problem, what they did to design and test
     their aircraft, and more in this interview with Wright biographer and
     aeronautics historian Tom Crouch. (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

     The First Reporter
     Read some of the first accurate reports about the Wright's earliest
     powered flights as recorded by A. I. Root in his journal Gleanings in
     Bee Culture in 1904 and 1905. (Grades 9-12)

     Pilot the 1903 Flyer
     In this clickable illustration of the first airplane, learn about all
     the parts that comprised the Wright Flyer and manipulate the airplane's
     controls to see how the Wright brothers piloted their aircraft. (Flash

     Wing Designs and Getting Airborne
     Discover what enables wings to pull an aircraft aloft and experiment
     with various wing designs. (Flash plug-in required; non-Flash version

     Building Wright Replicas
     In this photo gallery, see snapshots of a decade's worth of work by a
     team of aviation enthusiasts who crafted working replicas of 11 of the
     Wrights' original aircraft and two of their engines. (Flash plug-in

     NOVA News Minute: Wright Brothers' Flying Machine
     Use this news clip to introduce students to a science topic related to
     this week's program. Available when the program airs. Transcript

     In this classroom activity, students test the effects of wing warping
     by manipulating the leading and trailing edges on the wings of a paper
     airplane. (Grades 6-8, 9-12)
