In next week's two-hour "Battle of the X-Planes," NOVA takes you
behind the scenes of an intense five-year competition between
Boeing and Lockheed Martin to see who will produce a single airplane
design -- the Joint Strike Fighter -- to meet the needs of three
branches of the U.S. military: the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps.

   Behind the Scenes
   Read producer Mike Jorgensen's account of what it
   was like to be the first ever to film behind the
   scenes in a U.S. weapons competition.

   Where Combat Planes Retire
   Discover what happens to thousands of retired
   military aircraft sent to the Aerospace Maintenance
   and Regeneration Center, a storage-and-scrapping
   facility outside of Tucson, Arizona.

   Meet a Test Pilot
   Learn what it's like to hurtle towards the ground
   at 575 miles per hour, how it feels to fly
   something that nobody's ever flown before,
   and what makes a successful test pilot in this
   interview with Navy test pilot Philip "Rowdy"
   Yates. (Grades 6-8, 9-12)

   Designing for Stealth
   Achieving stealth means minimizing all the ways
   an enemy can detect a plane, whether by sight,
   noise, heat, or radar waves. In this interactive,
   find out how engineers design planes to avoid
   detection. (Flash 5 plug-in required; non-Flash

   Outfitting a Fighter Pilot
   Click on different parts of an outfitted F-15
   fighter pilot to learn about his flight
   gear, a 40-pound collection of vital clothing
   and equipment designed to counteract the effects

   Getting Airborne
   Learn what allows wings to pull an aircraft aloft

   angle of attack affect the relationship between
