Subject: Hilton Pond 03-01-05 (Signs of Spring)
Early March is a strange time in the Carolina Piedmont; one minute
it seems like spring, and the next winter re-asserts its dominance.
Despite the ever-present possibility of a March snowstorm, "This
Week at Hilton Pond" we saw some definite signs of spring, from
blooming wildflowers to molt in Northern Cardinals and American
Goldfinches.

As always we tally birds banded during the week and include a
rather long list of interesting recaptures. We also describe a
Rufous Hummingbird that we weren't able to capture and band
in Columbia SC.
