Subject: Hilton Pond 01/01/05 (Costa Rica Hummers)

Since we were in Costa Rica trying to band Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds for 16 days there was too much to show
and tell for just one installment of "This Week at Hilton Pond."

Thus, for the first time, I've combined two installments that include
a long description and plenty of photos of birds, bugs, flowers, and
Costa Rican culture--plus a summary of what we learned about
ruby-throats on their wintering grounds in the tropics.

I welcome any comments or questions you might have, but due
to yet another retinal surgery on 18 January I won't be able to
respond to e-mails for at least 7-10 days.

The Wildlife Protection Network is dedicated to educating
the public about wildlife, and the environment. The W.P.N.
endorses the use of nonlethal and humane methods for the
control of wildlife populations when deemed ecologically
necessary based on scientific evidence. The W.P.N. opposes
all lethal methods of wildlife population control. The W.P.N.
endorses only humane options for resolving wildlife-human conflict.
The W.P.N. focusses primarily on the state of Pennsylvania but
includes some wildlife protection issues in other states.

The photo essay for 1-14 January 2005 is at
<<http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek050101.html>> . Due to
the number of photos and high server demand, it will probably
take a while to download, but I hope you'll find it worth the wait.
(Please note that we're already recruiting participants for new
hummingbird excursions in late 2005 and/or early 2006.)

By the way, we did band a few birds at Hilton Pond last week,
so they're listed as always.

Please forward this message to friends who appreciate birds and
nature, and tell them they can get a free reminder for "This Week
at Hilton Pond" by sending a blank E-mail to
<<mailto:ThisWeek@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>> with SUBSCRIBE in the
subject line. Be sure to have them configure their spam filters to
accept E-mails from ThisWeek@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Happy Neotropical Nature Watching!
