MICROSOFT REWARD CREDITED WITH ARREST OF SASSER SUSPECT
An 18-year-old German student has been arrested for, and has confessed
to, writing the Sasser worm that began infecting computers around the
world last week. The arrest was made after acquaintances of the teen
tipped off the Munich offices of Microsoft, which set up a reward
program last year to try to catch writers of malicious computer code.
The informers, who said they were aware of the reward program, provided
Microsoft with details about the worm, convincing the company to notify
German authorities. After being arrested and having his computer
confiscated, the teen confessed. The informants will receive $250,000
if he is convicted. An official from Microsoft praised the reward
program, calling this first instance of its use a "defining moment in
demonstrating our ability to combat malicious code in collaboration
with the authorities."

SASSER AUTHOR TRIED TO CREATE VIRUS-FIGHTING VIRUS
Sven Jaschan, the German teen who confessed to writing the Sasser
computer worm, told authorities he had set out to write a virus, called
Netsky, that would remove versions of the MyDoom and Beagle viruses.
Jaschan reportedly wrote several versions of Netsky, eventually ending
up with the Sasser worm. According to one German investigator, Jaschan
is "a really good programmer" but didn't understand the scale of what
he was doing. Just before being apprehended by authorities last week,
Jaschan released a fifth version of Sasser, intended to limit the
damage caused by the previous four. The new version, Sasser e,
purported to include information about a patch against the Sasser worm.
Instead of limiting the damage of previous versions, however, Sasser e
also caused computers to reboot spontaneously. According to Sascha
Hanke, a Microsoft official in Germany, Jaschan "did it with good
intentions, but it had exactly the same damaging effects."

JAPANESE ACADEMIC CHARGED WITH COPYRIGHT VIOLATIONS
Japanese police have arrested an assistant researcher at the University
of Tokyo, charging him with violating that country's copyright laws
for having written the so-called "Winny" file-sharing application.
Isamu Kaneko developed Winny two years ago, and the application has
become popular reportedly because of its ability to conceal the
identity of users. A Web site offering downloads of the Winny
application was shut down in December, but earlier this year, sensitive
police and military files began circulating on the Winny network,
leading to renewed concern from authorities about the application.
According to the Mainichi Daily News, Kaneko was arrested because the
Winny application allowed a man from Takasaki and another from
Matsuyama to download pirated games and movies from the Internet.

SURVEY SAYS IT MANAGERS ANTICIPATE INCREASED SPENDING
According to new survey data from Forrester Research, IT managers
expect to increase spending by 2.4 percent in 2004 compared to last
year. The new prediction is up from an estimated rise of 1.7 percent
offered by the research company six months ago. Technologies expected
to see the biggest increases in spending include portals, content
management software, and business intelligence software. A majority of
those surveyed said they would spend more money this year for
enterprise application integration; 56 percent said they would opt for
Microsoft's .NET, while 44 percent will choose Sun Microsystems's
J2EE. Thirty-eight percent of respondents said they plan to replace at
least 25 percent of their computers, and 60 percent said they would
invest in wireless LANs in the coming 12 months.

INTEL REFOCUSES CHIP LINE
Intel has announced a shift in focus from single-core to dual-core
processors in what a company spokesperson called "a competitive move."
Dual-core processors have two engines rather than one and offer
improved performance for multimedia and home entertainment
applications. As part of Intel's shift, development has been halted on
Tejas, the replacement for the Pentium 4, and on Jayhawk, a processor
designed for servers. Some observers commented that Intel likely
realized the Pentium line of processors had reached its performance
limits, given its power consumption, and that the company would have to
do significant development work for small potential gains. According to
Intel, the company will release a dual-core processor for desktop
computers in 2005 and one for servers after that.
