   British Schools Ponder Electronic-Only Markups
   Sony Introduces Online Music Service
Home Users Hardest Hit by Sasser Worm

BRITISH SCHOOLS PONDER ELECTRONIC-ONLY MARKUPS
Exam centers in Britain, which must periodically submit student exams
for review by examination boards, may soon be able to handle those
submissions electronically. Currently, even centers that conduct exams
online must print hard copies of exams for review by the boards, which
monitor the centers to ensure they are giving proper grades. "Pupils
e-mail me their work--I mark everything online, so there are no paper
copies," said Nathan Jenkins of John Cabot City Technology College
(CTC). "But when we send in work ... to the exam board, I have to print
it all ... then package it all up for postage." Under a pilot program,
several exam boards in England and Wales will begin testing a system
whereby submissions are made on CD-ROM. Officials from exam centers
said the change is vital to keep the educational system aligned with
current practices. "This vision of education is not 20 years away,
it's here now," said David Carter of John Cabot CTC. Martin Ripley,
head of assessment policy at the Qualifications and Curriculum
Authority, expressed similar sentiments, saying electronic submissions
should be available for all exams within five years.

SONY INTRODUCES ONLINE MUSIC SERVICE
Sony has entered the online music market with its Sony Connect service,
joining ventures such as the relaunched Napster 2.0 and Apple
Computer's iTunes service. As with the iTunes service, whose songs
only play on Apple iPod devices, Sony's music service sells music in a
format that is restricted to Sony portable players. Michael Goodman,
analyst with the Yankee Group, said Sony's entry into the market is
late and that the company has to "play catch-up on two fronts, on
selling their audio players and getting people to use their music
service." According to Goodman, Apple's iPod currently controls 80-90
percent of the market for devices that can play legally purchased music
files. A spokesman from Sony Connect said the company believes the
market is still developing and that Sony "can expand the market to a
much broader audience with a broader line of devices." Sony Connect
offers more than 500,000 tracks that can be purchased for 99 cents per
song or as albums starting at $9.99. Sony Connect also allows users to
copy songs onto CDs that can be played in any CD player.

HOME USERS HARDEST HIT BY SASSER WORM
Security experts say that the Sasser computer worm, which was released
last week, is having a much greater impact on home users and students
than on corporate users. According to Network Associates, maker of
McAfee antivirus software, home users and students represent as many as
80 percent of those whose systems have been infected with Sasser and
its variants. More than 1,000 computers at the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst were reportedly infected after students
introduced the worm to the campus network. The infection rate, which is
notoriously difficult to pinpoint, is estimated to be between 500,000
and one million computers. Although the worm does little damage to
computers and does not replicate through e-mail, affected computers are
prone to repeatedly rebooting themselves, which has caused headaches
for those companies infected with the worm. Security experts cautioned
that the Gaobot (or Agobot) worm, which spreads much more slowly than
Sasser, is potentially much more damaging.
