FIGHTING MUSIC PIRACY AROUND THE WORLD
Legal actions have been taken in Denmark, Germany, Italy, and Canada
against file traders alleged to have violated copyright, signaling the
expansion beyond the United States of the entertainment industry's
crackdown on piracy. Canadian authorities are seeking the identities of
29 computer users, while officials in Denmark have sent 120 "civil
demand" letters instructing file traders to cease their activities.
Thirty file traders in Italy have been charged with criminal copyright
violations, and 68 users are under investigation in Germany. According
to Jay Berman of the International Federation of the Phonographic
Industry, the current actions are being taken under national laws
because the copyright law passed by the European Union has not yet been
ratified by all 15 member nations. Some observers suggested that
pursuing legal action under a variety of national laws is likely to
confuse computer users, especially when legal, large-scale online music
services are not available in Europe. Berman disagreed, saying there
are already more than 50 online music services and that the legal
actions will pave the way for more legitimate music services.

FILE-TRADING LAWSUITS COME TO FRANCE
Herve Rony, head of the SNEP (Syndicat National de l'Edition
Phonographique), the French record industry association, announced that
his organization is poised to file copyright infringement lawsuits
against file traders in that country. The announcement came as legal
actions against file traders have been filed in three other European
countries and in Canada. The French lawsuits are expected to target not
only individual file traders but also their ISPs, based on a law soon
to take effect that places some responsibility for filtering
copyrighted files onto service providers. According to the SNEP, since
October 2002, when broadband access became common in France, sales of
records in that country have fallen more than 30 percent.

PUBLISHERS SETTLE WITH COPY SHOP
The six academic publishers that had sued an Austin-area copy shop for
copyright violations have settled their case. Elsevier, John Wiley and
Sons, Pearson Education, Princeton University Press, Sage Publications,
and the University of Chicago Press had sued the owner of a copy shop
located near the University of Texas for including copyrighted
materials in its "NetPacks" coursepacks without obtaining proper
authorization. Samuel Odunsi, the defendant in the case, had faced
fines of up to $8.5 million. Under the settlement, Odunsi will pay
damages to the publishers and will "adopt compliant business practices
going forward."

SBC WILL OFFER WI-FI IN UPS STORES
SBC Communications announced it will offer Wi-Fi access in thousands of
UPS Store locations, giving customers the ability to use laptops or
other mobile computing devices to access the Internet. The FreedomLink
service will be available in about 1,500 locations by the end of the
year. The service will be expanded to as many as 5,000 locations by
2007. Many business users find themselves in UPS Stores while
traveling, and the new service will allow them to stay connected when
away from their offices. The deal represents one of the largest
implementations of Wi-Fi access points in the country, and a pilot
program could expand the service to another 1,100 locations in Europe.
Access to FreedomLink will cost $19.95 per month or $7.95 for a single
walk-up session. Meanwhile, Verizon Communications has set up about 500
Wi-Fi hot spots in Manhattan, and T-Mobile, which already offers Wi-Fi
access in Starbucks and Borders stores, said it will begin installing
hot spots in 1,100 Kinko's locations.
