EXPLORES MORE INTERNATIONAL OVERSIGHT OF INTERNET Delegates to the four-day United Nations conference on the Internet agreed to set up a working group to examine whether to increase international oversight of the Internet's administrative bodies, including ICANN, a company contracted by the U.S. Commerce Department to coordinate Internet addresses. Another committee will be set up to explore ways of paying to connect the world's poor countries and their peoples to the Internet. The United Nations also endorsed intellectual property rights, human rights, and media freedom over the Internet. New York Times, 15 December 2003 (registration req'd) http://www.nytimes.com/2003/12/15/technology/15divide.html GOOGLE ADDS SEARCH BY NUMBERS Google added a Search by Number feature to help users find information related to patents, parcel tracking IDs for FedEx and UPS, Federal Aviation Administration airplane registration numbers, Federal Communication Commission equipment IDs, and other numbers. The new service is available to English-language users of Google, with international versions planned. Information Today, 15 December 2003 http://www.infotoday.com/newsbreaks/wnd031215.shtml HACKERS ATTACK SCO GROUP'S SERVERS Hackers again struck Unix software company SCO Group's servers with more denial-of-service attacks over the weekend and Monday, making the company's Web site and file servers inaccessible for five of the past seven days. Security experts said that attacks in May and August should have provided enough warning for SCO to have protected its connection to the Internet by buying more bandwidth and connecting through Internet service providers with special technology to mitigate such attacks. SCO spokesman Blake Stowell said, "At this point, we are continuing to use the same tactics: keeping in contact with our Internet service provider and the U.S. Secret Service." ZDNet, 15 December 2003 http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105_2-5124190.html ALSO ********************************************** REPORT PREDICTS INCREASED ARMY USE OF IT U.S. Army Chief of Staff General Peter Schoomaker has published the report "The Way Ahead--Our Army at War--Relevant and Ready: Moving from the Current Force to the Future Force ... Now." The report emphasizes the use of information technology and agile logistics in the Army's Future Force efforts. The report states, "Battle command capabilities must be leveraged to enable interdependent network-centric warfare, supported by sense-and-respond logistics capabilities within joint, interagency and multinational full-spectrum operations." Federal Computer Week, 15 December 2003 http://www.fcw.com/fcw/articles/2003/1215/web-army-12-15-03.asp SUPPORT ENDING FOR WINDOWS 98 Microsoft announced that in January it will stop supporting Windows 98, although online assistance will continue, and the company might release security patches for serious threats. According to technology market research firm International Data Corporation, about 20 percent of Windows-based computers still run Windows 95 or 98. Support for Windows 95 stopped January 2001. Analysts do not expect problems with the phaseout because businesses, the largest users of PCs, tend to upgrade their computers every three to five years. Consumers, who are slower to upgrade, are advised to replace older operating systems because of their security risks when used on a network. Washington Post, 13 December 2003 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A61729-2003Dec13.html TOSHIBA TARGETS MOBILE DEVICES WITH SMALL DISK DRIVES Toshiba has developed a hard-disk drive of 2.1 centimeters in diameter that reportedly can store two to three gigabytes of data, enough for video or audio although not a full-length movie. Mass production is scheduled for 2005, with pricing yet to be decided. The company is targeting compact mobile terminals with the new drive, specifically digital consumer products and car-navigation systems.
