The IBM-Stanford Spintronic Science and Applications Center, or SpinApps, will include lab space and hardware at the Stanford campus in Palo Alto and the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose. Rather than studying how electrons transmit electrical charge, those involved in the field of spintronics are concerned with manipulating the spin of electrons. Spintronics holds the promise of smaller electronic devices that require less power and generate less heat than devices that transmit electrical charges. The new center also highlights the growing importance of partnerships between corporate and academic organizations following a decline in corporate funding for such research. According to Stuart Parkin of IBM's Almaden Center, "[The partnership is] something we need to do more of since support for basic physical science research at IBM has shrunk." According to the survey conducted in February, 17 million U.S. Internet users have stopped downloading music, in large part because of lawsuits filed by the entertainment industry against individuals suspected of violating copyright. One-third of those who have stopped downloading said the lawsuits were the reason. A majority of those who have never downloaded music said they probably never would because of the lawsuits, and 38 percent of those who continue to download said they do so less frequently as a result of the lawsuits. Overall, the percentage of Internet users who download or share music rose slightly since December, but that percentage was still less than it was a year ago. Wall Street Journal, 26 April 2004 (sub. req'd) http://online.wsj.com/article/0,,SB108299137503793510,00.html ORGANIZATIONS REAP REWARD FROM SECURITY TRAINING A survey from the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) indicates that most organizations reap significant benefits from security training and certification programs. [CompTIA is a trade association that offers a number of IT certifications, including one for security. --Ed.] According to the survey, organizations in which at least 25 percent of IT staff have had IT security training reported nearly 20 percent fewer security breaches. Of those organizations that offered IT security certification programs, 70 percent reported increases in security. Fifteen percent of the organizations surveyed require all IT staff to have security training, up from 11 percent last year, and 31 percent require at least half of their IT staff to have such training, up from 22 percent.
