The right and left halves of the brains in teens with above-average math skills 
are better at integrating information than brains of average students, 
according to a new study.

New blue-light scanning technology could detect if school food service 
employees washed their hands before serving lunch. The device highlights areas

* What is Finland's Secret?
Educators from around the world are visiting schools in Finland to try to learn 
their recipe for success. Finnish students outscored those in 31 other 
countries in mathematics, science, and reading, according to test results 
released last year.

* Disabled Students Get Testing Reprieve
High school seniors with disabilities in Alaska will not have to pass the 
state's exit exam this year to receive a diploma, according to a court 
decision. Discussions about how to accommodate students with disabilities in 
future classes are continuing.

* Students "Celebrate Generations"
Eighth graders at Rapid Run Middle School in Ohio researched their family 
histories and shared them with relatives during a "Celebration of the 
Generations" day at school.

* Holocaust Denial Lesson Honored
Connecticut history teacher Patrick Richardson's lesson "The Truth Makes You 
Free," about Holocaust denial, has earned an award from the University of 
Hartford. Students use primary sources, such as eyewitness accounts of the 
Holocaust, in considering Holocaust denial arguments.

* Retired Teachers Return to Mentor
Chicago has become the first city in the U.S. to hire retired teachers to 
mentor one or two first-year teachers twice a week. The mentor teachers are 
paid $124 a day.

* Students, Parents, May Rate Teachers
The Nashua (New Hampshire) Board of Education is considering reinstating a 
program that allows students and parents to submit anonymous written 
evaluations of teachers. A consultant has advised against reviving the program.
