I guess we need to sit down one of these meetings and just demo our
favorite distro.

I seem to have a lot of misconceptions of SuSE and Fedora based on bad
past experiences.
Here's another misconception.

ALL of my Debian desktops run KDE as their desktop. I personally don't
like Gnome, and the gnome libs get installed only as a dependency for
other packages.

However I also don't do the task selector during install - I install the
basic packages and then go on manually from there. I think that if you
just ask for a "desktop environment" in a normal Debian install you'll
get Gnome and KDE libraries and desktops, with gdm and Gnome set as the
default. I'll check it out and report back. The Gnome default is a
historical artifact dating from way back when when KDE's QT libraries
weren't GPL. But that changed and now KDE meets the Debian Free
Software Guidelines, and so is part of the core distribution.

Same thing as my stating that SuSE's YaST wasn't free - it didn't used
to be, but Kevin tells me that Novell GPL'd it a while back. And I'm
out of touch with Fedora because I didn't like my RedHat experiences.
Maybe time to get back in touch with some other distros.
