Hi Kevin,
Copy and pasted from
http://www.saragossa.net/LinuxG3/ls-skreen.shtml#gnome-ss

Try this

'In newer distros, the Gnome desktop environment offers a toolbar applet
called ScreenShooter. To have it handy in your toolbar, press the "foot"
menu and choose "Applets>Utility>ScreenShooter. You can position it
where you want it in the bar by right-clicking to get a menu and
choosing "Move".
ScreenShooter has two panes; the left one captures a window you
subsequently click on, the right captures the entire screen. The left
one also captures an area if you click and drag the mouse across the
part of the screen to grab.
Images are named with a datestamp automatically and show up in your
/home/user directory by default.'

Or using The Gimp

'Launch GIMP1.2 or newer. (I'm still a Mac mouser, so I select "Paint"
from the KDE pop-up menu, but you can type gimp at the command line) and
choose "Acquire>Screenshot..." from the GIMP toolbox "File" menu.
Once you have a screen capture window, save it as a gif by
right-clicking in the image to get a contextual menu at the pointer
location.
Name the image file with a ".jpg" extension, and GIMP will save it as a
jpg. To save as other types, use GIMP's menu commands to alter the file
type before saving. '
