[juneau-lug] scanner setup

hello all
i am trying to get my usb scanner up and running. i did a
sane-find-scanner and it returned /dev/usb/scanner0
but when i run scanimage --list-device i get no scanners identified.
and when i start xsane it says no scanners found. so im not sure where
to go next.
hardware specs
intel 845gv mobo
p4 1.8a
512 megs ddr 2100
usb2.0
redhat 8.0
useing kde (or what they call kde now)
other usb devices seem to work fine
any ideas?
