the problem is getting samba configured right. i know there is a nifty
frontend program you can use for configuring and maintaining you samba and
network shares, cant remember the name though. perhaps i have my linux box
right it is just the xp box that is giving me the hard time.

Yup, there should not be too much trouble. Sean, you mentioned that RedHat
changed their netconf tool - are you having trouble getting the RedHat 7.3
box online period (as in you have no network connectivity now), or are you
just having trouble getting Samba configured to talk to the XP-Pro box?

A Windows XP-Pro box should work just fine with Samba, including logging on
to a domain hosted by a Samba box. XP-Home is network crippled by
Microsoft, and will only do the peer-to-peer networking (I guess Microsoft
got tired of small businesses using their "home" OS line at work).

Can you give us a little more detail of where the problem is?

Cheers,

James
