Happens to the best of them. Over the weekend I updated my RedHat 7.2
box with up2date. I have up2date configured to download, but not
install new kernel images. I noticed that RedHat had a newer kernel
than my custom compiled one, so I tried it.

It broke my printing. In the 2.4 kernels, you have to specify support
for a parallel port in the general config area (of menuconfig) AND
specify support for a printer as a character device in the character
device area. Looks like RedHat left out one of the two, as when I was
using their kernel I didn't have an lp0 device to print to.

Then again, these days printers are either USB or ethernet, so maybe I'm
the dinosaur that RedHat just can't waste time supporting with a
parallel port printer....

Cheers,

James
